Intermezzo Espresso Café: A Mission Valley Favorite

If you’ve ever stopped in at Intermezzo Espresso Café, you’re probably a member of the restaurant’s loyal customer base, lovingly fostered by owners Ken and Norma Yearwood.

Starting with the warm greeting guests receive upon entering the charming café, their experience is enjoyable from beginning to end, as they peruse fresh baked pastries, hear the unmistakable sound of frothing cappuccinos being made and read the daily specials – hand-written in multi-colored chalk on a board behind the counter.

“We have very loyal customers,” said Ken. “Over the years, we’ve gotten to know many of them and have become friends. It’s been a joy to serve them.”

In search of a life with less ups and downs and more freedom, the Yearwoods decided to leave the radio business and bought the café in 1995. “We loved the location, and thought we could improve on it with more menu offerings and our personal touch.”

Since then, Ken and Norma have doubled the menu, with everything from coffee drinks, to smoothies, sandwiches, garden fresh salads, soups, desserts and more.

“Our Spicy Chicken Breakfast Burrito is a customer favorite,” says Ken. “We have guests that come in five days a week and order it.”

Other popular items include their Reese’s Peanut Butter Cookie, Acai Bowls, Green Smoothies, Banana Bread and Chai Lattes. “People tell us it’s the best Chai Latte they’ve ever had.”

And the Yearwoods regularly update their menu with the seasons. During the holidays, guests can partake in Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Marshmallow Mochas, Peppermint Mochas and more.

To discover what so many loyal customers already have, stop by Intermezzo and say hello to Ken and Norma while you’re there. The café is open Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
