Since opening its first San Diego location at Hazard Center in 2015, Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill has become a favorite with Mission Valley residents and San Diegans alike – with the restaurant winning awards in Mission Valley News’ 2016 “Best of Mission Valley” poll for best BBQ, business lunch, dinner, new restaurant and American cuisine.
Offering high-quality signature items in a stylish, comfortable dining environment, Wood Ranch features everything from premium American Baby Back Pork Ribs to Certified Angus Beef™ steaks, fresh fish, chicken, pasta, salads, a nationally-recognized kids’ menu and more.
We recently sat down with Partner Alejandro Benes to learn more about the restaurant and its offerings, and the impetus for opening a San Diego location…
Q: What appealed to you about San Diego?
A: San Diego County is a good target for our style of food, and of course, we love the community. We looked for a location for many years, but didn’t find many opportunities until recently. Now we see much more potential for finding locations across San Diego.
Q. What sort of reception did you receive from locals?
A. We have gotten a very positive response to what we offer our guests. The food and service are well received. We understand that it takes time to develop a relationship with the community and we look forward to having one for many years.
Q. What are your most popular dishes?
A. Without question, tri tip is the top seller at Wood Ranch. We probably sell more tri tip in California than any other restaurant. Along with tri tip, baby back ribs and our BBQ Chopped Chicken Salad are at the top the list.
Q. How often do you update the menu? Any items in the pipeline that diners should stop in and try?
A. We have some really interesting dishes coming up on our “Try Something New” menu, which will feature a unique BBQ dish that diners can’t really find anywhere else in San Diego or even California!
Q. How would you describe your food? What makes it unique?
A. Wood Ranch serves American food that features regional BBQ favorites made from high-quality meats. What makes Wood Ranch distinctive is that the menu is prepared in-house. We make all of our side dishes, desserts and entrees in the restaurant.
Q. Some customers may be surprised to know you have a beautiful outdoor patio. What sorts of events do you host there?
A. We love hosting groups on our patio – everything from business gatherings to speed dating events. Guests can create a special menu for their event or use the menu that is provided.
Q. Any upcoming specials, events, etc. that customers should be aware of?
A. Our new menu will feature an American whiskey list that we hope folks will love. We’ll be offering some distinct and unique bourbons, ryes and American single-malts.
Q. Anything else readers should know?
A. Wood Ranch offers catering services and also has a happy hour Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wine lovers should visit us on Tuesdays when we offer half off all wines by the glass or bottle. We have a great kids’ menu and offer free kids’ meal cards that guests can get from any manager.
We also support the community by offering organizations the opportunity to hold fundraisers inside the restaurant. Get in touch with one of the managers and we’ll be glad to help set it up!
